Discuss the contemporary theory of sustainable landscape design while learning alternative landscaping methods to alleviate environmental pressures caused by invasive species, storm water runoff, and habitat destruction. Study the landscape to recognize potential problems and identify solutions that will reduce the environmental impact and conserve biodiversity. Apply what you’ve learned by designing a solution for a given landscape and share your ideas with your classmates during the final session.

Certificate Information

This is a core course in the Landscape Design Certificate program.

Pre-requisite: Landscape Design 1 or Sketching for Designers

Mondays, May 5–19 and June 2–9, 2025 
6:00–8:00 pm

You’ll have access to the recordings of the weekly live-streamed sessions and online material for six months following the conclusion of the course.

Instructor

Sarah Leaskey

Sarah Leaskey is a licensed Landscape Architect who joined the Refugia team in 2024 after nearly two decades at OLIN in Philadelphia, PA. Her portfolio of prior work features a variety of complex corporate and institutional campus projects. Leaskey is passionate about planting design and her work re-imagines the traditional American landscape with a focus on increased biodiversity and creative use of native plants. She is equally passionate about the built environment and loves to explore materials for use in bespoke furnishings or unique site details. Leaskey was born and raised in Indiana, where she earned her degree in Landscape Architecture from Purdue University. Leaskey actively serves on the Professional Advisory Council at her alma mater and was honored as the 2022 Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award recipient. She currently lives in Wayne with her husband, two sons, and two cats.
