Symphonic registration and lyrical approach are encouraged in all performances.
Qualification Round
Maximum performance time for recorded submission is 30 minutes.
Applicants will submit a program of contrasting works demonstrating technical virtuosity, lyric sensitivity and shaping, and nuanced control of instrumental timbre. Scores must be provided with your application.
Preliminary Round
The three selections listed below may not exceed 30 minutes, including time between pieces. The competition judges must approve all musical selections.
- Choose any Max Reger transcription of a work by Johann Sebastian Bach. A score must be provided.
- Choose a piece of a melodic, lyrical nature. This selection can be either original organ music or any form of transcription. This piece must be different than any chosen for the qualification round. A slow movement of a larger work is acceptable. A score must be provided.
- Choose a virtuoso organ work from the 19th, 20th, or 21st centuries, or a major transcribed work (either previously published or an original transcription). A score must be provided.
Final Round
The five selections listed below may not exceed 45 minutes, including time between pieces. The competition judges must approve all musical selections.
- Choose a major piece from the canonical (core) organ repertoire. A score must be provided.
- Choose a major transcribed work of overture nature (Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Weber, Rossini, Brahms, etc.) either previously published or an original transcription. A score must be provided.
- Choose a piece of a melodic, lyrical nature. This selection may be either original organ music or any form of transcription. This piece must be different than any piece chosen for the preliminary round but may be a piece you have chosen for the qualification round. A score must be provided.
- A piece will be chosen by the competition judges and will be announced when the ten competitors are chosen. Please allow for up to 6 minutes for this piece.
- Choose an additional work (or works) of your own preference. A score must be provided.
