Taking Poinsettias to New Heights
Longwood Gardens is known for growing ordinary plants in extraordinary ways. Take poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) for example. While most people are familiar with commercial poinsettias that measure between one- and two-feet-tall, our tree-form poinsettias can reach heights of seven feet with heads measuring five feet in diameter.
For added spectacle in the Main Conservatory, Euphorbia pulcherrima‘Annette Hegg Red’ are grown in six- to eight-foot-wide hanging baskets. The frames for these baskets are specially crafted by our metal shop and come in two halves so that they can be tilted to allow the plants to get adequate light.

Euphoria Over Euphorbia: Our Poinsettia Panel
Every year during A Longwood Christmas, we feature a small, tucked-away display of poinsettia cultivars in our North Passage (adjacent to our Bonsai display). These varieties are part of our efforts to continually improve the quality of our horticulture displays and introduce new plants to our guests.
